Redefining Chronic Pain – one group at a time
Recent guidelines from the American College of Physicians for treatment of chronic low back pain recommend the initial selection of non-pharmacologic treatment. The Center for Integrative and Lifestyle Medicine at Cleveland Clinic offers group medical visits for pain management which address diverse drivers of chronic pain using acupuncture, massage, chiropractic care, Chinese Herbal medicine, and the stress relief techniques of meditation, yoga and heart-centered hypnotherapy. Effectiveness of this approach was evaluated using the PROMIS-57 questionnaire on the first and last visit. Data show significant reductions in anxiety, depression, fatigue, sleep disturbance, pain interference and intensity as well as significant increases in physical functioning and social satisfaction. Research findings were published in Pain Medicine in February 2021. In the current transition to value-based healthcare, this type of intervention may represent an optimal way for an interdisciplinary team approach to help patients with chronic pain implement evidence-based and effective non-pharmacologic integrative medicine treatment.
