Dr Karen Pilkington
Karen is a qualified pharmacist and information scientist, Karen has experience in the health service and academia. While at Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital, she established a specialist medicines information centre and had a senior clinical role. She reviewed prescribing in a health district and was subsequently appointed to a newly created role as evidence-based practice advisor. She joined the University of Westminster to manage a Department of Health funded project evaluating the evidence on complementary therapies resulting in a series of publications, a PhD by publication and a national information resource.
Karen’s research has continued to focus on evidence review and synthesis particularly in the areas of anxiety and depression, cancer, chronic conditions, complementary therapies, self-care and community-based interventions. She has over 50 peer-reviewed publications and is a member of the Cochrane Complementary Medicine field advisory group, the Cochrane Information Retrieval Methods group, the PRISMA Harms Group and the editorial board of several international peer-reviewed journals. She joined the University of Portsmouth in 2016 and, while Associate Head (Research), led a review of research in the School of Health Science and Social Work. She continues to mentor staff in research and supervise students in a visiting role.
