Dr Mark Lown

Dr Mark Lown is a Clinical Lecturer within Medicine at the University of Southampton and a GP at Highfield Health in Southampton. Dr Lown, recently held an NIHR in-practice fellowship at Southampton and has current interests in nutrition and cardiovascular medicine research in primary care. Being dual qualified as both an Engineer and GP, he also has a special interest in medical technology. Dr Lown recently completed a positive trial investigating the effects of a plant extract (Mulberry) to reduce glucose and insulin rises following ingestion of carbohydrate. Current trials include a large multi-centre trial investigating probiotics to reduce infection rates and antibiotic resistance in care home residents (PRINCESS), a trial investigating blood pressure medication reduction in the elderly (OPTIMISE), an AF screening trial using consumer devices (SAFETY) and a retrospective cohort study evaluating the long-term effects of lengthy antibiotics.
