Dr Merlin Willcox
Merlin is a General Medical Practitioner and an Academic Clinical Lecturer at the Department of Primary Care and Population Sciences at the University of Southampton. He has experience of conducting clinical trials of herbal medicines in different settings since 1997. Merlin is part of groups working on Integrative Health Care and Antimicrobial Resistance, in the UK and internationally. This includes conducting randomized controlled trials of different interventions to reduce inappropriate antibiotic use ' for example delayed prescribing and alternative (herbal) medicines. They have conducted randomized controlled clinical trials of herbal medicines (including Traditional Chinese Medicines) as alternatives to antibiotics in the UK for urinary tract infections, acute bronchitis, and acute exacerbations of COPD. He has also collaborated with colleagues in Africa conducting clinical trials of herbal medicines for the treatment of malaria.
