Prof Dr Yvonne Samstag
Yvonne Samstag holds the Professorship for Cellular Immunology at the Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University in Germany. She is an internationally recognized expert in research on the molecular mechanisms that control the function of human immune cells and how they are influenced by the microenvironment. Thereby, her focus is on cancer and chronic inflammatory diseases.
Prof. Yvonne Samstag is the initiator and spokeswoman of the research consortium “AZKIM” (Academic center for complementary and integrative medicine, since 2016) and of the research and practice initiative “KIG BaWü” (Complementary and integrative health care provision for Baden-Württemberg, since 2020), both funded by the Ministry of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Furthermore, she is the initiator and spokeswoman of the interdisciplinary research training group “train4CIM” (Elucidation of molecular mechanisms as foundation for an evidence-based complementary and integrative medicine, since 2017) at Heidelberg University. In addition, she is board member and project leader of the Collaborative Research Center “SFB TR 156” (The skin as sensor and effector orchestrating local and systemic immunity), financed by the German Research Foundation.
Prof. Yvonne Samstag studied medicine and ethnology at the University of Freiburg, Germany. She started her research career in the field of immunology at the Max- Planck-Institute for Immunobiology in Freiburg. Thereafter, she became research group leader in the Department of Applied Immunology at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg. In parallel, she worked as a physician in internal medicine and laboratory medicine. Since 2005 Yvonne Samstag holds the Professorship for Cellular Immunology at the Medical Faculty of the University of Heidelberg.
